1976 New Year's Eve, San Francisco. A Firebird transports a crew of glitter kids away from the city. Forget the trunk full of cash and illegal firearms. Forget the disco heist and sea of felonies left in their wake. They are five friends happily rolling down thunder road with no horizon in sight. They are YOUNG AMERICANS.

Young Americans edition by Josh Stallings Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Josh Stallings is my homeboy, and I've enjoyed everything he's published. Every time you think you've got Josh pegged, he comes up with something out of left field like this one. Cool glitter ball disco bloodbath retro, set in some neighborhoods that Josh and I both grew up in, at a time we were both frequenting those areas. I will admit I was not familiar with several of the specific venues in this novel, but I enjoyed that Josh wrote passages set in Humboldt County where I lived for almost 30 years. Be advised: explicit sex scenes, and a profane anarchist hedonist mindset to the cast. Not PG-13 and as always from Josh, not for the squeamish.

Young Americans edition by Josh Stallings Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

This was a good story. I love the Moses McGuire series, and have read everything Josh Stallings I can find.
One of those rare books that is not only well crafted, emotionally evocative with characters who stay with you long after the final page, but is also just a plain old romp of a read. The characters in this story are heart achingly real, filled with both the courage and the recklessness of youth. Stallings so perfectly captures the vibe of the San Francisco disco scene it's as if you are standing under the glittering lights of a mirror ball with Donna Summers playing while you read. Simply brilliant.
But very entertaining and fast moving, nonetheless.

The story is very implausible but a fun and quick read

Give it a try if you want a quick action novel.
Fun book and great twisty story. I was a kid in SF during this time so brought back great memories. I really enjoyed this.
Gawd I loved this book- Josh Stallings is juggling with so many cultural icons I can't even count them... young love, coming of age, the heist, crazy families, PTSD, homophobia... what have I missed? These go into the blender that is Josh's amazing sense of humor and place and out comes this wild wild ride. Yes Josh's Noir fan-base may be somewhat confused but give it a try- fall in love with these guys- they are soooo sweet. This was one of those books I wanted to know what happens next...
Josh Stallings brings the San Francisco of the seventies into sharp focus with this taut heist novel. The story explodes out of the gate like glitter from a saw-off shotgun, unleashing a collection of compelling characters that are relatable, repulsive and real. Pop cultural signposts are scattered throughout the fast-paced narrative, giving a strong sense of time and place to the propulsive plot. Excited to get such a great new read so late in the year.
Having lived and survived the decade in which this book is set--the Bay Area in the sweet and insane 70s--albeit not at the speed and intensity of the delicious characters in this novel, I can attest that Josh Stalling strikes all the right notes, that they ring true, and that when the chorus sweeps in it it is all power chords and sweet harmony the climax is thunderous. The story rips along at a rocking pace, the lifestyle and choices and relationships of all the players make for a fine retro hit of sweet storytelling. I found myself alternately laughing and cringing at the memories of good friends and hard choices mirrored in Sam and her crew and a time of fast cars, loud rock, pure drugs and living out of, in and on the edge of getting by, getting high and getting out clean. The dialog sings and the setting is one Stallings knows well, from the back alleys of SF to the bland ticky-tacky retreats of the mid-penninsula. A rockin' fun ride all round.
